Prior to joining Vision Financial Group, Phil Martin was a client of ours who was attracted by the culture, the positive attitude and the principles of integrity, responsiveness, and competitiveness. This ultimately led to Phil joining VFG as a VP of sales in July of 2021.
He graduated from Hope College in 1996 with a BA in Chemistry. Spending two years at BASF in a R&D laboratory. He went on to accumulate over 25 years of experience in analytical sales, focusing primarily on chromatography and mass spectrometry, but also in spectroscopy and various analyzers.
Some of his most proud contributions are the public-private partnerships that he has helped create at local universities. “It is increasingly difficult for universities and researchers to get government funding for research and teaching instruments.” Through a grant process he was able to create partnerships with several notable universities, among which Northern Michigan University and the University of Toledo.
Spending most of his life in the Motor City, Phil considers himself from Detroit and is a Lions fan. “Detroit has had its ups and downs, but you cannot deny the blue-collar grit of the people that live here. You have to be tough to be a Lions fan.”
In late 2020, Phil’s family took a hard hit, losing his beloved mother to a stroke. This renewed a perspective on life and faith. He understood that “Life is short and there are no guarantees. I believe that we are here to love and help each other, to live each day to its fullest and to be grateful for the experience.”
Phil is a proud family man. He and his wife, Dana, have been married since 1994. They have two sons, Mitchell and Luke.
On his off time, you can find Phil cooking. He has an affinity for BBQ and outdoor cooking gear. Currently he owns 3 smokers, and old-fashioned Weber grill and a Hibachi griddle. During the spring of 2020, he supported the healthcare workers and their families in his neighborhood – providing meals several times a week. Besides cooking, he enjoys golf and biking.
